10:45: Potosi's Thersia Elskamp just made a free throw to give the Cheiftans a 47-42 lead and the Warriors emptied their bench. Black Hawk had an amazing season, but their first state tournament appearance ended in a 49-42 loss to Potosi.

10:40: Potosi senior Thersia Elskamp drained a jumper and putback her own miss to gibe the Chieftans a 42-37 lead with 1:57 left. Katie Place scored down low with 1:27 to go to cut the Chieftans' lead to 42-39. Black Hawk will have to rely on their press down the stretch. Potosi. Potosi made free throws down the stretch to seal the game. Black Hawk sophomore Melissa Wellnitz made a 3-pointer in the final 20 seconds to cut the lead to 45-42.

10:27: Black Hawk junior Kim Wellnitz blocked a shot by Alison Tobin and drove to the basket and picked up the third foul on Morgan Lass. Wellnitz made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 35. On the Chieftans' next possesion, the Warriors suffered a blow when Wellnitz picked up her fourth foul with 4:42 to go and was forced to the bench.

10:25 Free throws will make or break the both teams down the stretch. Kim Wellnitz just picked up her third foul with 5:38 left and Alison Tobin made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Cheiftans a 35-34 lead.

10:21 Potosi's Brianna Reising scored down low to cut the Warriors' lead to 34-32 and Morgan Lass scored a basket to tie the game at 34 with 6 minutes, 25 seconds left in the third quarter. Black Hawk took a full timeout.

10:16 Kim Wellnitz scored down low to give the Warriors a 34-30 lead and Paige Butler drew a charge on Potosi. After a sppech during a pep rally last night, where a WIAA official told the Warriors to let the Pigeons fly at the state tournament (playing without fear), the Black Hawk fan section started chirping like pigeons. The Warriors lead at the end of three quarters 34-30. It should be a battle in the fourth quarter. Ehight minutes until a championship game tomorrow.

10:10 After shooting 1-for-7 in the first half Black Hawk's Kim Wellnitz has shot 3-for-3 in the third quarter and has scored six points. The basketball just hit the media table I was at and I thought I may have to run for cover. The Warriors are up at the media timeout, 32-30 with 2:42 to go in the third quarter.

10:06 Black Hawk senior Gabi Lehner gave the Warriors a spark in the third quarter by banking in a 3-pointer and scoring on a layup to give the Warriors a 30-27 lead. Potosi senior Thersia Elskamp answered with a basket to cut the Warriors' lead to 30-29. This game will likely come down to the wire.

10:03 Black Hawk junior Kim Wellnitz drilled two jumpers to start the third quarter to give the Warriors a 25-23 lead. Potosi has 13 first half turnovers and the Warriors scored seven points off those turnovers.

9:49 At the half, Potosi has a 23-21 lead. Potosi senior Morgan Lass has nine first half points to lead the Chieftans.

9:44 The Warriors went almost 5 minutes without a field goal until Paige Butler made a layup to cut the Cheiftans' lead to 17-15. Morgan Lass followed with a jumper for the Chieftans. Black Hawk senior Maria Meives made a basket. Paige Butler made two free throws with 1:18 before the half to cut the Chieftans' lead to 22-21.

9:39 Potosi senior Alison Tobin made a layup to give the Cheiftans a 16-13 lead with about 3:50 to go in the second quarter. Kim Wellnitz was called for a charge and the Warriors need someone to step up and make a big basket.

9:35 The offense has bogged down in the second quarter. The Warriors want to make the game a track meet with their press and the Chieftans want to feature a grind it out halfcourt game.

9:31 Morgan Lass nailed a jumper to give the Chieftans a 14-13 lead.

9:27 The Warriors forced a Potosi turnover to start the second quarter. The Cheiftans are on pace for 25 or more turnovers this game. If that happens, I like Black Hawk's chances.

9:24 Black Hawk senior Paige Butler made a spectacular power move to the basket she hit and was fouled. She converted the three-point play at the free throw line to give the Warriors an 11-8 lead with 1:41 to go nin the first quarter. Potosi senior Alison Tobin, an Edgewood recruit, countered with a 3-pointer. The Warriors have a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

9:20 Black Hawk junior Kim Wellnitz made a driving shot to give the Warriors an 8-4 lead. Potosi senior Morgan Lass hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the Warriors' lead to 8-7 with 2:41 left in the first quarter. Don't forget the game is being televised on Ch. 27.

9:15 The Warriors have now forced five turnovers, but Potosi took a 2-0 lead on a jumper by senior Morgan Lass. Black Hawk senior Gabi Lehner made a driving shot over a host of Potosi players to tie the game at 2-2 with 5 minutes, 40 seconds left in the first quarter. The Warriors took a 4-2 lead on two free throws by senior Hailey Meier with 5:26 to go in the first quarter.

9:10 Black Hawk has already forced three turnovers, but the score is 0-0.

9:05 It's time for tipoff and I expect Black Hawk sophomore Melissa Wellnitz and junior Katie Place to be the X-factors off the bench. Potosi is led by senior Thersia Elskamp and Alison Tobin, an Edgewood College recruit.

9:01: I think it will be key for the warriors to get senior Paige Butler and Kim Wellnitz going early on. Potosi has a tough and physical defense. The Warriors will also have to do a good job of boxing out and limiting the Cheiftans to one shot.

We are minutes away from the tipoff at the WIAA Division 4 state tournament semifinals between Black Hawk and Potosi. It will be interesting to see if Black Hawk coach Mike Flangan comes up with any new wrinkles on the press and half court traps. I'm sure Potosi has worked on the press for over a week gearing up for a rubber match with the Warriors.
