I won't be able to tear myself away from this Saturday's WBCA All-Star basketball gala.
Literally.
First, I'll get to watch the affably-intense Tony Cates go at it one more time at 9 a.m. at the UW Fieldhouse.
After hanging around to watch the future Pecatonica Viking stars entertain the event's masses during the 10:45 boys Division 1 game's halftime, I'll sneak in some lunch before Joey Hartwig arrives.
The recent Black Hawk graduate will finally meet his athletic equals in the Division 4 boys game.
Then Joey, myself and what will likely be a caravan of South Wayne sports fans will head to MATC to watch another recent Warrior grad, Aryn Wellnitz.
She'll join forces with the enemy, Pec grad Danielle Senf. But they'll proudly represent the Six Rivers East by playing for the Division 4 South squad in the last game at 2:15.
Since I'm yet to master the art of being in two places at once, I'll have to dash back to the Fieldhouse if I want to see Mitchell Erickson's swan song in the Division 3 game, also at 2:15.
This is hardly work, though. I'm honored that I get to be on the floor, snapping pictures of these longtime local staples as they say goodbye to their prep careers the only way they know how - by trying to beat the best, and be the best, yet again.
