MONROE - Sophomore Aaron Ziolkowski scored three goals in the second half to help the Monroe High School boys soccer team rally to tie Dodgeville 4-4.
Monroe (0-1-1) battled back from a two-goal deficit in the second half. Ziolkowski's hat trick helped the Cheesemakers get a tie against a team they could see again in the postseason.
"It was really a good gut-check," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "They (Dodgeville) are in our playoff bracket, and it was really important. They (Monroe) all played harder in the second half."
Monroe sophomore Alex Barradas scored the first goal on an assist by junior Nick Benkert at 18 minutes, 27 seconds. Dodgeville scored two first half goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Ziolkowski scored his first goal at 47:11 to tie the game at 2. The Dodgers answered with two goals to take a 4-2 lead.
Ziolkowski scored his second goal on an assist from junior Jahor Valentin at 53:50. Ziolkowski scored the game-tying goal off a corner kick by junior Daniel Lapp at 84:14. The goal in the final six minutes was pivotal for the Cheesemakers.
"I talked to Aaron and Victor (Vasquez) after the first game and told them they needed to step up, but Victor is usually just on defense," Vasquez said. "Aaron really stepped up. It was a big lift for us."
The Cheesemakers will play two games in the Monroe Invitational starting with a match against Wilmot Union at 10 a.m. Saturday at Honey Creek Park.
