Monroe Pee Wee A take Second in Avalanche Classic Tournament

The Monroe Pee Wee A Avalanche hosted a tournament on February 22-24. Also playing were Tomah, Waupaca, Beloit and Midwest.

Monroe opened with a 9-4 win over Tomah on Day 1.

Monroe took control of the game early putting up the first five goals. Jace Daughenbaugh opened up the scoring less than two minutes into the game, with an assist by Cole Bulhozer. Bulhozer and Ethan Rosenstiel added two more in the first, with assists by Brody Koehn and Gavin Roth, with the first period ending 3-0.

The second period remained scoreless until Rosenstiel put one in with 2:24 left on the clock. Cameron Newcomer assisted. About a minute later, Roth found the back of the net, assisted by Carter Nemergut and Koehn. Tomah finally put their own point on the board right before the end of the period, with the Avalanche up 5-1 after two.

The third period was much of the same. Tomah scored three more times, but the Avalanche didn’t let up, scoring four more goals in the game. DJ Rath put one in, unassisted to start Monroe scoring in the third. This was followed up by two goals from Carson Bulhozer, with assists from Rosenstiel and Nemergut. Nemergut finished the scoring, assisted by Koehn and Alex Beer. Kyle Theorin did his part having 12 saves on the evening.

Monroe would play two games on Day 2 and posted two wins. First up was a 7-0 win over Midwest.

The Avalanche had complete control of the game, and came out with a 7-0 win.  Newcomer earned himself a hat trick scoring the first three goals, assisted by Cole Bulhozer, Daughenbaugh and Roth, respectively.

Rounding out the scoring in the second and third were Rosenstiel, assisted by Cole Bulhozer; Carson Bulhozer, assisted by Beer; Nemergut, assisted by Rath and Carson Bulhozer, and Daughenbaugh, assisted by Roth. Theorin had eight saves on the morning.

The second game on the day proved to be a tougher matchup with Waupaca. This game has hard-fought and evenly matched and remained scoreless for the first two periods.  Five minutes into the third, Monroe put up the first score, with Daughenbaugh putting one in the back of the net, assisted by Rosenstiel and Benjamin Erdley. The Avalanche would add one more about a minute later when Carson Bulhozer scored, assisted by Beer. That would be all of the scoring, with the Avalanche coming out on top 2-0. Theorin had a shutout with 18 saves.

In the championship on Day 3, the Beloit Blades won 6-1.

Monroe’s lone score would come in the third when Carson Bulhozer put one past the goalie, assisted by Erdley and Rosenstiel. Theorin had 14 saves on the morning.

Squirt A’s 3A state tournament recap

The Squirt A Avalanche hit the ice March 2 in the state tournament. Monroe played Waupun and lost 4-1.

Waupun scored just two minutes into the game, but the Avalanche didn’t give up and Brady Stuart managed to find the back of the net on a pass from Brixen Dale which kept the game tied at 1-1 for the remainder of the first period. After that, the Avalanche offense couldn’t put anything together and lost the first round 4-1. Blake Folgate made nine saves in net for the Avalanche.

Game 2 came a few hours later and the Avalanche won decisively over against Amery, 9-1.

Monroe jumped on the board right away with a goal from Tysen Folgate with an assist from Brixen Dale. Then Beau Janecke went unassisted, putting the Avalanche ahead 2-0 to close out the period.

Amery got on the board first in the second period, but Janecke again took it up the ice and scored unassisted and kept the Avalanche lead 3-1.

The third period was more productive as Janecke earned his tournament hat trick 1:33 into the third. Brady Stuart found the back of the net twice on a series of passes from Owen Hicks and Brixen Dale. Halfway through the period, Janecke once more drove to the net unassisted. Hicks followed suit doing the same at the 9:05 mark. After 11:48 minutes of play, Stuart caught a pass from Janecke for the final goal of the game.

Blake Folgate kept the puck out of the net nine times for his team, sending them to the consolation championship game.

The Avalanche hoped to contain the Waupaca team and secure fifth place and a consolation championship March 3. Unfortunately, Waupaca was far more skilled and older than the young Avalanche team and won 11-1.

Monroe’s only goal they were able to get past their opponent came from Janecke in the first period. Blake Folgate recorded 25 saves.

Bantam B’s end season

The 2018-19 season came to a close for the Monroe Avalanche Bantam B squad March 3, as they split with Quad Cities in a doubleheader at SLICE.

In the first game, a 6-3 loss, Monroe drew first blood, as they did quite a bit in the season, with Aidan Grey snapping off a wrister that went off the left post and in. That would be the only goal in the period, and Monroe went into the second leading 1-0.

Quad Cities snuck past a pair of goals in the 2nd, to go up 2-1 headed into the third period. The Avalanche would get hit with a pair of penalties in the final frame that would put the nail in the coffin for the opener. Easton Dreyfus and Grey each added a goal in the third, but Monroe would run out of time. Goalie Xander Obert recorded 29 saves in the loss.

In Game 2, the final game of the season, Monroe again got off quickly going up 2-0 on goals from Payton Hathaway (Aidan Grey and Sergio Fletcher assisting) and Grey (assist to Easton Dreyfus).

Grey would score again in the second period, but Quad Cities would hit the back of the net twice as well, making the score 3-2.

Fletcher and Dreyfus (assists to Hathaway and Haden Barker) sealed the deal for the Avalanche in the third, as Monroe would go on to win 5-3. The Avalanche would fire off 40 shots on goal in the game, one of the highest of the season. Goalie Xander Obert had 22 saves in the win, setting Monroe’s record to 17-18-1 on the season.
