SOUTH WAYNE - Third-quarter struggles continued to plague the Black Hawk girls basketball team Friday in a 56-37 loss to River Ridge.
The Warriors stayed close to River Ridge early, trailing by only three points at the end of the first quarter and by just seven at the half. But the Timberwolves outscored Black Hawk 18-6 in the third quarter behind strong play from Bridgette Myers, who scored a game-high 24 points.
"The third-quarter struggles have kind of been a theme," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of his team, which fell to 2-7, 1-2 on the season. "We're playing pretty short-handed - we only have six players. But we were able to be competitive in the first half.
"To give up 24 (points) to one kid is frustrating. But (Myers) played very well."
Black Hawk was led by junior Aleigha Sigafus, who scored 16 points, and junior Tatum Jackson and freshman Hannah Herbst, who each scored six points.
Flanagan said he knew the team "would take some lumps" with its difficult early schedule, but he hopes tough games like Friday's will help the Warriors learn from their mistakes.
"We have to find a way to put four quarters together, but right now it's not happening," he said. "Hopefully, some of these tests that we've been through will help us."
Black Hawk will play at Edgerton on Monday.
