MONONA - In a showdown for first place in the Badger South Conference, Monroe freshman Alyshia Witt delivered for the Cheesemakers Tuesday.

Witt went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lift the Cheesemakers to a 9-4 win over Monona Grove. Monroe junior Cassidy Pivonka walked in the third inning and Witt followed with a two-run homer.

"Alyshia is here because she has the ability," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We knew she would be a contributor. We knew she could hit varsity pitching and she did today."

With the win, Monroe improves to 4-2, 3-0 Badger South and Monona Grove drops to 3-1 in conference.

"It's a big one to win on the road," Buvid said. "Hats off to our kids. Natalie (Dillon) gutted it out and we got timely hits and good defense."

Monroe junior shortstop Brooke Adams combined with junior second baseman Kaya Teasdale to pull off a 6-4-3 double play after Dillon walked two in the first. Teasdale also made a running catch in short right field in the seventh.

"You don't see too many 6-4-3 doubleplays in fastpitch softball," Buvid said.

Dillon pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up four runs on five hits. She struck out four and walked eight. Three of the eight Dillon walked came around to score. The Cheesemakers capitalized better on their scoring chances with five of their eight walks scoring.

Monroe sophomore Carly Upmann reached on an error and senior Kari Jordan scored to give the Cheesemakers a 3-2 lead. Pivonka added a key RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2.

Witt had an RBI single in the sixth and Teasdale added a two-run single to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 7-2 lead.

Monroe will host Madison Edgewood Thursday and Stoughton Friday.

"Our goal is to win the next two conference games so we don't give one away that we won on the road," Buvid said.
