Wiota splits weekend set of games

WIOTA - The Wiota Indians used a 2-out rally in the bottom of the ninth to knock off Blanchardville in a Home Talent Sunday League game, 9-8.

The two teams had swapped the lead of the game in each of the final three innings, with the Bullets taking an 8-7 advantage in the top of the ninth. Brad Schliem and Merrill Brunson came up with the game-tying and game-winning RBI hits for Wiota (7-3) in the ninth.

Milton Kurschner was hung with the loss while Nick Flannery picked up the win in relief.

Blanchardville's Mike Cleary led all batters at the dish, finishing 3 for 3.

On Saturday, the Indians were dealt a tough loss to Verona, 16-4 in eight innings.

Verona accumulated 16 hits and took advantage of two Wiota errors. Verona scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to erase a one-time 4-2 deficit. A five-run eighth knocked Wiota out of the game.
