WIOTA - It didn't take Wiota slugger Jay Haldiman long to deliver a big hit for the Indians.
Haldiman's two-run single off Monroe's Ben Korth in the first inning sparked a five-run rally as the Indians beat the Brewers 8-5 on Sunday in a Home Talent Western Section League game.
"Those five runs off the bat in the first inning were big for us," Wiota co-manager Dick Schliem said. "Monroe has some very good hitters. A couple of hits and a long ball could have tied it."
The Brewers (4-6) committed three errors in the Indians' big first inning, and three of the five runs Korth gave up were earned. Rooney Janecke came in and pitched six innings in relief of Korth. Janecke gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out three and walking three.
Haldiman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Wiota (6-2), and Jeff Solberg went 2-for-5.
Wiota's Tommy Meier went 2-for-3 and also earned the win on the mound. He pitched 8 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on 12 hits, and he received a scare when a line drive ricocheted off his hand and hit his nose.
Schliem said he had trouble stopping the bleeding but didn't suffer a serious injury.
Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell went 3-for-5, and Matt Busjahn was 2-for-4. Korth finished 2-for-5, and Scott White had two RBIs for the Brewers.
Despite the big first inning, the Indians left a combined eight runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
"We struggled in the fifth, sixth and seventh," Schliem said. "We could have broke the game open. That kind of hurt us too."
