WIOTA - There was no controversy in Wiota's 6-4 win over Monroe in a Home Talent League Western Section game Sunday, June 16
Wiota (6-2) had four players with multi-hit games led by Brad Schliem who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kory Tuescher went 2-for-3 and Merrill Brunson and Jay Haldiman were each 2-for-4. Monroe's win earlier in the season against Wiota was switched to a forfeit because the Brewers used an ineligible player - pitcher Jake Gorsuch. "The commissioner told me I could get a kid from Illinois," Monroe player-manager Jeff Newcomer said. "The Home Talent Board voted to take our two wins away when Jake beat Dodgeville and Wiota and voted to kick him off the team even though they said I could use someone from Illinois."
The Indians scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Wiota's Jeff Solberg pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out three and walked two. Justin Doyle pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up one run. The Brewers left 12 runners on base.
"They (Monroe) had their opportunities," Wiota manager Dick Schliem said. "That's a big stat. It's a big win for us. We are starting to hit better. Defensively, we have played better. We didn't know who are starting pitcher was going to be at the beginning of the year. Solberg has been really good. Our pitching has been better than expected."
