WIOTA - Ryan Von Haden is trying to recapture the magic he had eight years ago when he led Wiota to an undefeated Home Talent League baseball season.
Von Haden, who had Tommy John surgery three years ago, was back in the driver's seat pitching the Indians to a 12-0 win over the Monroe Brewers in the first round of the Home Talent League playoffs on Sunday.
Von Haden pitched five innings and gave up five hits and no runs. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk. Von Haden threw just 55 pitches.
"We were in control of the game," Wiota co-manager Dick Schliem said. "We didn't want to throw him any more than we had to."
Wiota's Jeff Solberg went 3-for-4 and Merrill Brunson was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer off Rooney Janecke in the fourth inning. Jay Haldiman also had two hits for the Indians.
Justin Hahn was the starting pitcher for Monroe. He gave up four runs on five hits. The Indians scored four unearned runs in the fourth off Janecke after the Brewers committed two of their three errors for the game.
"Those two errors just killed them," Schliem said.
Brunson then made them pay with a three-run homer.
Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell and Adam Scherer were each 2-for-3. With the win, Wiota moves on to play at Ridgeway on Sunday, Aug. 12.
Argyle 4, Dodgeville 1
ARGYLE - Justin Crotty struck out 12 and the Beavers came through with enough clutch hitting to win a pitcher's duel.
Dylan Schwitz went 3-for-4 to lead Argyle. Schwitz reached in the fifth when a Dodgeville player couldn't catch his wind-blown pop up. Schwitz then stole second and Dan Godfrey came through with a go-ahead RBI single to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh, Travis Erickson reached on an error and Drew Nafzger walked. Lance Rossing then delivered a two-run single.
Crotty pitched a complete game and gave up just one earned run on three hits. With the win, Argyle advances to play at Verona on Sunday.
