Wildcats upset Ponies

MONTICELLO - Southwestern scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning on a dropped line drive in right field and the Ponies couldn't come up with a clutch hit as the Wildcats upset Monticello 3-1 in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal Wednesday.

"Plays like that happen," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "It's like my assistant coach said, 'the sun comes up tomorrow.' The seniors took it hard. They didn't want it to end at home."

Monticello (19-7) was limited to just three hits, but the Ponies had a golden opportunity to win it in the bottom of the seventh. The Ponies loaded the bases with one out, but Southwestern struck out Monticello senior Courtney Leuzinger and senior Alyssah Kubly grounded into a game-ending fielder's choice.

"We couldn't have been in a better situation with our No. 3 and 4 hitters coming up," Garrison said. "I couldn't have asked for two better hitters to be up. We just didn't get it done."

Monticello sophomore Jessie Garrison went 1-for-2, while Kubly and senior Brecklyn Klosterman were each 1-for-3.

Leuzinger pitched a complete game and gave up just one earned run on four hits. She struck out four and walked three.



Iowa-Grant 14, Darlington 2

LIVINGSTON - The Darlington softball team was plagued by four errors and lost to Iowa-Grant 14-1 in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Wednesday.

Darlington's Taylor Cox and Mariah Wiegel were each 2-for-3 to lead the Redbirds. Iowa-Grant had a six-run second inning to take a 10-0 lead. Darlington's Tayah Paulson pitched three innings and gave up eight earned runs on nine hits. She struck out two and walked three.



Wisconsin Heights 11, New Glarus 1

MAZOMANIE - Wisconsin Heights' Jenna Schoenmann hit a three-run double to lead the Vanguards to an 11-1 win over New Glarus in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Wednesday.

Macenzie Kraemer struck out five in a complete game two-hitter.

New Glarus pitcher Jessica Van Dusen pitched 51⁄3 innings and gave up 11 earned runs on eight hits. She struck out two and walked eight.



Belleville 9, Pardeeville 2

BELLEVILLE - Miranda O'Rourke, Claire Johnsrud and Allie Kowalski combined for six hits to lead Belleville to a 9-2 win over Pardeeville in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Wednesday.

O'Rourke went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Johnsrud and Kowalski were both 2-for-3 for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits. Pardeeville was haunted by five errors.

Belleville freshman Cassidy Heller pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up one earned run on three hits. She struck out four and walked one.
