Wildcats too much for Glarner Knights

NEW GLARUS - It's never easy to play Belleville in volleyball. For a team as young as New Glarus, trying to stay motivated when the scores get out of hand quickly can be even tougher.

"I asked them, 'how can I get you to have the excitement I have?' but I guess you can't. We just didn't have it tonight," Glarner Knights head coach Lacy Bloedorn said. "It's tough. Belleville's experienced and we are young. We hung with them a little bit, but couldn't pull it out. Belleville's a hard one to start with."

Belleville hardly felt threatened in the Capitol South Conference opener Thursday, winning in straight sets, 25-8, 25-7, 25-7.

"There is a time when we have our tall girls in that can block and play the net, but when we get small (on rotation) and get behind on blocks, we just don't have it. Our back girls just get creamed," Bloedorn said. "We just don't have the height. Hopefully we get better with speed getting to the ball."

In the opening game, New Glarus hung with the Wildcats, taking a 5-4 lead at one point. But a 12-1 run put game out of hand.

During the second game, Belleville jumped out of the gate, going on a 17-1 run that took away whatever wind the Knights had in their sails.

"We need confidence. I think we are better than the girls think they are. I just hope they can see it after a while," Bloedorn said.

The Wildcats continued pouring on the points in the third game, despite sitting many of its starters early.

Natalie Manion led Belleville with 14 kills and three aces, while Alexa Secord led New Glarus with three kills and five digs

New Glarus (0-1) now has the unkind task of traveling to Wisconsin Heights Tuesday. The Vanguards went undefeated in conference a year ago.
