MADISON — The West/North defeated the East/Southeast in the annual Home Talent League All-Star Game at the Duck Pond in Madison’s Warner Park Aug. 3.
Evansville’s Jameson Lavery threw two perfect innings for the East/Southeast and his teammates did most of their damage during those frames.
Lavery coaxed four ground balls, three to Stoughton second baseman Irvin Medina, and struck out two of the six batters he faced.
After a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts by West/North hurler Zac Arneson of Ridgeway, the East/Southeast put up two runs in the third and fourth.
With Cazenovia’s Jacob Heubsch on the mound, Sun Prairie’s Randy Molina singled to start a two-run outburst. Molina was right at home in the confines of The Duck Pond as he was a former player while in college.
Molina scored on a long double by Jefferson’s Cody Roth who also scored in the frame on a single by Evansville’s Alex Hahn.
The East/SE added two more to the 2-0 lead in the third. Medina walked and scored on an RBI double by Montello’s Ryan Pollesch. Graham Schroeder-Gasser of Cottage Grove then singled and Bryan Wallace, of the Fort Atkinson Generals, made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.
The West/North got started with a double by Reedsburg’s Chad Mazur. Sauk Prairie’s Sam Koenig then singled Mazur to third where he scored on a fielder’s choice by John Moynihan of Verona.
They combined for another run in the fifth. Jeff Solberg of Wiota walked and Dodgeville’s Dayne Leonard found a gap in left center to send Solberg home and cut the lead in half.
What ended up as the winning run scored in the sixth for East/SE. Lake Mills’s Adam Hosey singled, Montello’s Nate Andrews walked and Hosey scored on A ground out by Wes Knutson of DeForest.
The West/North chipped away with a run in the seventh. Singles by Solberg, Cross Plain’s Ryan Pulvermacher and Leonard loaded the bases then a fielder’s choice by Wiota’s Tommy Meier made it 5-3.
It became a one run game in the eighth when Middleton’s Brennan Schmitt walked, Mazomanie’s Hudson Barsness singled him to third where Ashton’s Derek Prochaska finished the job with an RBI sac fly to center.
Dodgeville’s Nate Michek came on to toss a scoreless ninth to set the tone for a classic finish. Pulvermacher put a running in scoring position with his double with one out but Wallace, who had come on to pitch, ended it with a ground out that sent Pulvermacher to third, and a strikeout.
Hosey was 2-for-2 for the E/SE while Pollesch and Roth doubled. Roth, Hahn, Wallace, Pollesch and Knutson all had RBIs.
Leonard and Pulvermacher were both 2-for-3 for the W/N. Leonard, Mazur and Pulvermacher each had a double. Leonard, Tommy Meier (Wiota) Prochaska and Moynihan each had an RBI. Argyle’s Dylan Schwitz was 0-for-1.
