Wels shines for Monroe at Bi-State

LA CROSSE - Monroe senior wrestler Gavin Wels still is in title contention after the first day of the Bi-State Classic.

Wels (20-1) won his first three matches Monday of the two-day tournament. Wels received a bye at 112 pounds in the first round, then defeated La Crosse Central's Dylan Weigel in a major decision, 16-5. Wels also topped Athens' Dustin Finck, 4-2, before winning a quarterfinal match over Lakeville South senior Seth Roberts, 5-0. Wels wrestles North Crawford-Seneca senior Dylan Kansier (15-0) in a semifinal today.

After the first day, the Cheesemakers are in ninth place out of 17 schools in the Division 2 tournament. Ellsworth leads River Valley 161.5-153.5.

Monroe junior Dillon Weckerly at 171 pinned Casey Myers of Lakeville South in 5 minutes, 48 seconds in the first round. He then lost 10-0 to Marty Guza.

Fellow junior Cory Kundert at 215 had an impressive first day. He pinned Ithaca's T.J. Brockway and won a 21-8 major decision over Andrew Prusinski. Kundert then lost to Nick Gurrath, who pinned him in 48 seconds.

At heavyweight, senior Lucas Leu survived a scare, defeating Cashton's Adam Hartfield, 9-5 in overtime. Leu lost a second-round match to Viroqua's Taylor Henry, who pinned him in 1:22.

After a first-round bye, sophomore Dylan Schwitz at 135 was pinned by La Crescent senior Cole Gibson in 1:17.
