Wellnitz nets top honor

MONROE - Black Hawk sophomore Jen Wellnitz was recently named the Six Rivers East Conference Player of the Year.

Wellnitz, who was named first-team all-conference, was also selected as first-team all-state. Wellnitz averaged 14 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game and led the Warriors back to the sectional for the fourth straight. The Warriors' fourth straight trip to state came up short in a 43-40 loss to Barneveld in the sectional semifinal.

Black Hawk (22-3) earned a share of the Six Rivers East title along with Barneveld. Black Hawk senior Kate Quinn was selected to the first team.

Juda seniors Ellen Kiser and C.J. Dunwiddie were also named first-team all-conference. The other area first-team all-conference players include Monticello sophomore Marissa Berg, Albany junior Cassidy Bump and Argyle senior Danielle Treuthardt.

Barneveld had three players named to the first team, including freshman Rachel Slaney, senior Hailey Cannoy and junior Madison Laube. Slaney was also named all-state.

Barneveld coach Jim Myers was named the conference coach of the year.

Black Hawk seniors Katie Powers and Chaesta Shager were named honorable mention all-conference.

Pecatonica junior Michelle Francois and junior Lizzy Britt were named honroable mention all-conference. Argyle junior Kayla Ostby and senior Cortney Gilbertson as well as Monticello seniors Becky Nelson and Katie Gierhart were also honorable mention.
