SOUTH WAYNE - With a pep rally going on Tuesday to send off the Black Hawk girls basketball team on its second straight state tournament appearance, the postseason honors rolled in for the Warriors.

The Six Rivers East released its all-conference teams recently. Black Hawk had two players named first-team all-conference including senior Kim Wellnitz and senior Katie Place.

Wellnitz, who averaged 14.4 points per game and 8.3 rebounds, was named the conference's player of the year. Wellnitz, who will play basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville next year, is excited about the honor.

"I think it's a big accomplishment," she said. "I know there are a lot of players like Kimee Chandler of Pecatonica and Courtney Sullivan of Barneveld who have worked hard. I really appreciate the coach for putting in a vote for me. It feels great. I'm honored."

Wellnitz eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone this year and is the school's career scoring leader.

"I have got where I am because of the teammates I have had and the coaches who have practiced me hard and never gave up on me."

Place averaged near a double-double per game (9 ppg and 9.7 rebounds).

"She has kind of been a secondary role player until this year," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "For her to step up and get recognized for what she has done is really redeeming for her."

The other area first-team all-conference players include Pecatonica senior Kimee Chandler, Juda sophomore Ellen Kiser, Albany juniors Sydney Bump and Hayli Peach, who led the Comets to the Division 4 sectional semifinal. The other first-team all-conference players were Juda senior Heather Boeke and Monticello junior Taylor Pfeuti.

Flanagan, who guided the Warriors to a 26-1 mark and a second straight state appearance and conference championship, was named coach of the year. Flanagan remained humble despite winning the top coaching award in the conference.

"They will give it to whoever wins the conference," Flanagan said. "I don't put much stock in that. That comes with the territory. That's something the girls did, not me."
