WAUPUN - The Monroe softball team's offense has been stymied in a three-game losing streak after the Cheesemakers dropped a doubleheader to Waupun Saturday.
Waupun defeated Monroe 4-1 and 6-1 Saturday. With the losses, Monroe drops to 10-6, 7-2 Badger South.
"We are just not getting it done offensively right now," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We are not playing horribly. We have to play a little better to get it done. To beat good teams you have to win two of the three areas - pitching, defense and offense. We got beat in all three areas by Waupun."
In the first game against Waupun, Monroe junior Natalie Dillon pitched six innings and gave up four runs - two earned runs on six hits. She struck out four and walked four. The Cheesemakers committed four errors.
"They (Waupun) have a very athletic and quick team," Buvid said. "They did a lot of short-game things on us."
Waupun sealed the win with a two-run fifth. Monroe senior Kari Jordan went 2-for-3.
In the second game, Monroe carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth. Monroe freshman Alysha Witt singled to left and Jordan delivered an RBI double to score Witt to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead.
Waupun stormed back with a six-run fifth off Monroe sophomore pitcher Carly Upmann. Upmann walked four of her six batters in the fifth and gave up four hits in the big inning. Dillon started and pitched three shutout innings. Upmann pitched four innings in relief and gave up six earned runs on five hits. She struck out five.
"The walks came back to hurt us," Buvid said. "We had just one tough inning. It was a combination of the walks and hits."
Monroe plays a key conference game at Fort Atkinson today and at Madison Edgewood Tuesday.
