WAUNAKEE - The Monroe softball team didn't get enough hits with runners in scoring position and lost a doubleheader to Waunakee on Saturday.
Waunakee outdueled Monroe (12-7) handing the Cheesemakers a 3-1 loss in the first game. In the second game of the twin bill, the Warriors edged the Cheesemakers 6-4 in eight innings.
"We didn't hit the ball very well all day," Monroe coach Joe O'Leksy said. "We were not consistent. We had a number of base running mistakes that cost us runs."
Monroe sophomore Olivia Bobak pitched a complete game in the first game and gave up one earned run on three hits. She struck out seven and walked one.
"Our deal in the first game is we gave up one run on a wild pitch and after a dropped third strike and an error, we gave up two runs in the sixth," O'Leksy said. "The reality is we should not have given up any runs."
Monroe sophomore Hailey Betthuaser went 2-for-3 with a double.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Warriors scored two runs in the eighth to pull out the victory.
The Cheesemakers trailed 3-1 after five innings. Senior Lexi Hilliard delivered hitting a three-run home run in the sixth to tie the game at 4.
"We just didn't get the timely hits we needed with runners on base other than Lexi's home run in the sixth," O'Leksy said. "It was nice to see her get out of the slump she has been in."
Bobak pitched eight innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits. She struck out four and walked two.
Hilliard went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI and Bobak was 2-for-4.
Monroe will play at Stoughton on Tuesday and then host Monona Grove Friday on Senior Night at Twining Park.
"I'm confident we will turn it around over the last few games," O'Leksy said.
