MONROE - The Monroe High School girls tennis team got solid production from its singles players but dropped a 4-3 nail-biter to Watertown in a Badger South Conference match on Tuesday.

Monroe sophomore Grace Tostrud defeated Watertown sophomore Amber Choinski 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Monroe sophomore Emma Towne beat Watertown junior Michelle Stangler 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

"Grace Tostrud and Emma Towne played strong singles matches tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Both of these girls really dictated the style of the match. We have been working hard on getting on the offensive early in points, and I felt they both did that well tonight."

The other win for the Cheesemakers came from the senior No. 2 doubles team of Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller. Bunker and Miller rallied to defeat Watertown senior Sydney Cooper and junior Katie Schleicher 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller got off to a slow start today, dropping the first set 6-0," Saugstad said. "To the girls' credit, Parris and Kiara fought hard to get the momentum back and really played a strong second and third set. Parris and Kiara had struggled the last couple of matches so it was great to see them get some momentum back."

Watertown senior Ricki Budweitz at No. 1 singles defeated Monroe senior Maggie Setterstrom 6-0, 6-2. Budweitz was a state qualifier last year.

"The score didn't indicate how close the match was," he said. "Maggie fought hard and made her opponent work really hard."

Monroe will play at Badger South Conference power Madison Edgewood on Thursday.
