SOUTH WAYNE - The Lady Warriors are ranked No. 3 in Division 4 girls basketball by the Asssociated Press for a reason.

The Warriors (9-0, 4-0 Six Rivers East) dominated Saturday's game against Albany (6-7, 3-3), which had been moved back from Friday due to inclement weather, winning 58-28.

"They could not wait to get into the gym today," Warriors head coach Mike Flanagan said of his team's desire to play after wind chills canceled multiple days of school. "They have been chomping at the bit to get back on the floor."

Black Hawk scored the first five points, and picked up an 11-1 lead with 3:24 to go on a free throw by Paige Butler, who finished with 12 points.

Black Hawk continued to roll in the second quarter, using a heavy press and strong post play to extend its lead to 36-12 by halftime.

"We rely on our press to give us opportunities. If we can force other teams to turn the ball over, it cuts down on their chances to score the ball," Flanagan said.

"The kids like that style and they did a good job of playing the full-court press."

Black Hawk never let up, and Albany could never catch up.

The Warriors forced the Comets into 31 turnovers.

"At halftime we had 21 turnovers, and you can't have 21 turnovers against a team like this," Albany head coach Mike Brunhoefer said. "This team is a very good team and is a very fast team. But we're not there yet."

Black Hawk was glad to open the scoring difference early. The large leads allowed Flanagan to play his entire bench for extended minutes.

"This is one of those games that we were fortunate enough to get some of those kids in that usually don't get to see a lot of action," Flanagan said.

All 11 Warriors scored.

"I thought all my backups did a great job. I thought Cassie Jorgenson was real active on the boards and Riley (Argall) got a basket late. Those are the kids who are at practice to make our players better. It would only make sense that when you get opportunities to take advantage," Flanagan said.

Kim Wellnitz led all scorers with 13 points for Black Hawk.

"As a coach, you go into every game trying to figure out who you are going to take away. I'm so lucky that with my team, we have so many different options and players that can contribute that we are a very hard team to defend," Flanagan said.

Brunhoefer, the Comets' first-year coach, was impressed by his first look at Black Hawk.

"I'm pretty impressed with their team. They're well coached and are a good group of girls. Hopefully our girls can learn from it and get better," Brunhoefer said.

Black Hawk hosts River Ridge (7-3, 3-2 Six Rivers West) on Tuesday in a Six Rivers Crossover game, while Albany hosts Highland (2-9, 2-3).
