Warriors willed to win by Meives' moneyball

BARNEVELD - Maria Meives has put a positive spin on the term "chucker."

The 5-2 guard found a small patch of daylight over two Barneveld defenders as the clock wound down in overtime and buried a game-winning 3-pointer in the Black Hawk's thrilling 61-58 overtime victory Friday night.

"I wasn't even paying that much attention," Warriors head coach Mike Flanagan said as he was prepared for a second overtime. "She's not a giant by any means and I bet she didn't know it went in until the crowd reaction."

Meives finished the game with nine points and helped erase the fact that the Warriors blew an early six-point lead at the beginning of overtime. Kim Wellnitz led Black Hawk with 18 points and played the majority of the extra session in foul trouble. Paige Butler added 11 before fouling out late.

Freshman Melissa Wellnitz added eight big points in just her fourth game at the varsity level. Her points are a big asset, but Wellnitz has already established herself as the fastest player on Black Hawk.

Pecatonica 47,

Argyle 32

For eight minutes, Pecatonica's share off a Six Rivers East title lay in question.

Over the next 16 minutes the Vikings put any doubts to rest.

Pecatonica (15-2, 10-1) outscored Argyle 30-15 in the middle two quarters as Kimee Chandler, Danielle Senf and Brittany Kent all scored 10 points apiece for the Vikings. A victory at Juda Tuesday night would mean an outright title for Josh Tarrell's ballclub.

Columbus 79,

New Glarus 25

There is, believe it or not, a silver lining for coach Braden Rindy after Friday's romp at the hands of Capitol North frontrunning Columbus.

The Cardinals hit 34 field goals and led 61-14 through three quarters.

The last time the Glarner Knights got beaten by such a convincing margin, they turned around from a loss to Lake Mills Jan. 3 to put together a nice winning streak.

Kendra Mussehl led New Glarus (10-6) in the losing effort with eight points while Kayla Waddell led four double-digit Columbus scorers with 16.

The Knights hope to have a short memory when they face Cambridge Thursday for the outright lead in the Southern Division of the Capitol Conference.
