SOUTH WAYNE - In a matchup that resembled a football game at times, Black Hawk won the first round of its showdown with Barneveld 47-32 Monday night.
It wasn't always pretty, but Black Hawk's rebounding prowess and defensive pressure sparked the Warriors (6-1, 3-0 Six Rivers East). Black Hawk, ranked seventh in the Associated Press Division 4 state poll, got nine of their 11 offensive rebounds in the first half.
"It doesn't really mean anything," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of the win over the Golden Eagles. "It's one conference win. We don't put any more emphasis on this one than we do any other one. We don't put any more stock in this one. If we did, you run the danger of having a letdown."
Barneveld (5-4, 2-1) got off to an ice cold start shooting 0-for-11 for most of the first quarter. Black Hawk senior Kim Wellnitz, who scored a game-high 21 points and had nine rebounds, scored a layup on the break with 3 minutes, 45 seconds to go in the period to give the Warriors a 9-0 lead.
"The team we just played is a really good team," Wellnitz said. "Our team has a lot of respect for them. Coach always does a good job of preparing us for this game. We just needed to go out and play to our potential."
Barneveld junior Anne Slaney snapped a seven minute scoring drought when she hit a baseline jumper.
"Let's not take anything away from Barneveld," Flanagan said. "They had some nice touches. They just had a hard time finishing. We have been there before when nothing is going easy."
The Warriors used an 8-0 spurt to open up a double-digit lead in the second quarter. Black Hawk junior Melissa Wellnitz hit a fade away jumper over two Eagles' defenders on the break to give the Warriors a 17-4 lead.
Black Hawk sophomore Chaesta Shager helped the Warriors close the second quarter with a bang as she banked in a clutch buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Warriors a 22-12 halftime lead. The Warriors could have had a larger lead, but they committed several of their 30 turnovers in the first half.
"We have some young guards," Flanagan said. "I believe they will be good players. They have big shoes to fill," he said.
Black Hawk graduated three senior guards from last year's state qualifying team.
The Warriors forced Barneveld into 27 turnovers with a pressure defense that stymied the Eagles.
Flanagan said the Warriors have been having great starts with their press the last several games. However, as the game goes on, the press hasn't forced as many turnovers.
"We are still working on our conditioning," he said.
Kim Wellnitz ignited the Warriors to a 9-4 spurt to start the third quarter. She scored down low and was fouled. Wellnitz converted the conventional three-point play to give the Warriors a 29-16 lead with 4:30 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing possession, she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback to extend the Warriors' lead to 31-16.
Black Hawk junior Rachel Rygh scored 10 points and had five rebounds. Senior Katie Place scored six points and had eight rebounds. Junior Melissa Wellnitz had four points, four rebounds and five steals.
Flanagan said Rygh did a great job playing defense on Barneveld senior Courtney Sullivan. Sullivan, who is averaging 10 points per game, was limited to just three points.
"She's one of the better guards in the area," Flanagan said.
Barneveld was led by freshman Madison Laube and senior Brooke Arneson who each scored seven points.
