PLATTEVILLE - Black Hawk opened its 2009 football season with a big win Thursday over conference foe Shullsburg, 14-6, at UW-Platteville.
"We came in with a lot of questions," Warriors head coach Cory Milz said. "Going in, we figured the key would be our defense. The kids responded well."
Senior Cody Foster led the way on the ground, running 17 times for 134 yards and a score. Sophomore teammate Michael Walker powered his way for 58 yards on 11 carries and the game's first touchdown.
"Walker kept running dives and inside veers. He caught Shullsburg off-guard," Milz said. "Our offensive line deserves a lot of credit. They came in fresh and got off the ball well."
Walker scored on a 15-yard run just 25 seconds into the second quarter. Nearly five minutes later, Foster squirted for a 17-yard run for Black Hawk's second score.
Shullsburg scored its only touchdown in the third after Black Hawk muffed a punt.
"I was really impressed with our defense. They hit well and were aggressive," Milz said.
Shullsburg looked to be on a scoring drive as time was winding down, but the Warriors picked off a pass in the endzone to seal the win.
Black Hawk's defense held Shullsburg to just 6-of-13 passing for 40 yards and two interceptions. Shullsburg did move the ball on the ground, however, registering 190 yards on 41 carries.
The Warriors picked up 191 total rushing yards on 37 attempts, and junior quarterback Michael Wolff was 5-for-7 for 38 yards and an interception.
Black Hawk plays at Belmont next Friday, Sept. 4.
"Our first four games are against what many people picked to be tops in conference," Milz said. Black Hawk plays Benton on Sept. 11 and Potosi on Sept. 18.
