SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team shook off a slow start and defeated Parkview 42-25 Monday night.

Parkview outscored the Warriors 7-3 in the first quarter. The game was tied at 14 at halftime, but the Warriors broke out in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 28-11.

Black Hawk, ranked fourth in the Associated Press Division 5 state poll, improved to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Six Rivers East.

"We struggled early to finish shots," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "I didn't think we were very patient. Our offense was much better in the second half."

Flanagan said the Vikings got too many second-chance points.

Black Hawk sophomore Jen Wellnitz scored a team-high 16 points and senior Chaesta Shager had 14.

Darlington 60, Benton-Shullsburg 39

DARLINGTON - Juniors Claire Scott and Cassidy Chambers each scored 18 points to lead the Redbirds to a non-conference win.

Scott also had a game-high 19 rebounds for the Redbirds. Darlington (10-7, 6-3 SWAL) outscored Benton-Shullsburg 20-5 in the first quarter and led by nine points at halftime. The Redbirds put the game away with a 19-7 third-quarter surge.

The Redbirds had five players score in the first quarter.

"We ran the floor well and moved the ball," Darlington coach Mike Chambers said. "That was kind of nice to see early on.

"I think we got a little complacent in the second quarter. They closed the gap a little bit."

Darlington senior Amy Jorgenson added 11 points for the Redbirds, who made 10 of 12 free throws.

Potosi 61, Argyle 45

POTOSI - Argyle had a tough time breaking Potosi's fullcourt press and lost a Six Rivers Conference crossover game.

The Chieftains outscored the Orioles 19-9 in the first quarter and led 33-24 at halftime. Senior Cortney Gilbertson scored 20 points to lead Argyle.

"Our decision making against the press wasn't what it needed to be," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "Our passing wasn't what it usually is."

With the loss, Argyle drops to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in the Six Rivers East.
