SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk Warriors' defense spoke loud and clear by allowing just two points in the first quarter in a 49-33 WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal win over the Green Lake Lakers (3-18) Tuesday.

Black Hawk raced out to a 21-2 first quarter lead and built a 29-9 lead at halftime.

"I thought we were pretty patient in the first quarter and worked it in for some good shots and hit the glass hard," Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan said.

Senior Katie Powers scored nine points and senior Kate Quinn added seven points for Black Hawk.

"We were solid on the defensive end. We made it difficult for them to score," Flanagan said.

The Warriors' big first quarter turned out to be the difference in the game as the Warriors were outscored over the final three quarters, 31-28. "Once we got the lead, we lost our focus a little bit," Flanagan said. Black Hawk (21-2) will host No. 8 seed Rio (16-8) Friday in the regional semifinal.

Darlington 60, Waterloo 8

DARLINGTON - There were 10 players score for Darlington, led by senior Amy Jorgenson with 19 points and junior Claire Scott with 13 points as the Redbirds demolished the Pirates in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal Tuesday.

The Redbirds left no doubt about the outcome by taking a 26-1 halftime lead.

"I challenged everyone, if they wanted to stay on the court, they had to do it on the defensive end. We went into the game hoping to play a strong game defensively, knowing they (Waterloo) have trouble scoring. Our defense took them out of any possibility they had," Darlington head coach Mike Chambers said.

Waterloo (2-21) came into the game averaging 25 points per game and scored fewer than 25 points in 10 games this season. Darlington (15-8) will travel to No. 3 seed Cambridge (12-10) Friday in the Division 4 regional semifinal.

Monticello 46, Oakfield 42

OAKFIELD - A 12 day layoff and a three game losing streak didn't stop the Monticello Ponies from pulling an upset on the road at Oakfield to open up postseason play.

Sophomore guard Marissa Berg scored 20 points and the Ponies rallied in the fourth quarter to top the Oaks in the Division 5 regional quarterfinal Tuesday. The Ponies trailed 30-27 to begin the fourth quarter, but outscored Oakfield 19-12 over the final eight minutes to grab the win. Freshman Alyssah Kubly added eight points for the Ponies. Monticello (11-11) will travel to No. 2 seed Barneveld (20-3) for the regional semifinal Friday.

Fall River 70, Albany 38

FALL RIVER - The Pirates jumped out to a large halftime lead and the Comets saw their season come to an end in a loss at seventh-ranked Fall River in a Division 5 regional quarterfinal Tuesday.

The Pirates took a 46-13 halftime lead in getting their 10th win in their last 11 games. Junior Kirstie Kauk and sophomore Felicia Conley each scored 11 points to lead the Comets. Albany ends its season with a record of 5-18.

Randolph 54, Pecatonica 30

RANDOLPH - The Pecatonica Vikings had "upset" on their minds for the first half of their Division 5 regional quarterfinal at Randolph Tuesday. In the second half, the 10-ranked Randolph Rockets (18-5) wouldn't allow that to happen.

The Vikings held a 10-4 lead after the first quarter and trailed 18-16 at halftime. But, in the second half, the Vikings were held without a field goal for nearly the final 13 minutes and outscored by the Rockets, 36-14. Junior Emily Fargo was the lone player in double figures for Pecatonica with 10 points. Junior Michelle Francois added eight points for the Vikings. With the loss, Pecatonica ends its season 4-19. Randolph advances to the regional semifinal and will host No. 5 seed Juda Friday.
