SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team Friday was selected for a Team Sportsmanship award by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and Rural Mutual Insurance.

The award was given in recognition of the team's performance at the WIAA state tournament in March. The Warriors defeated Northwood 42-31 in the WIAA Division 4 semifinals but were defeated by Newman Catholic 64-30 in the Division 4 final.

The WIAA commended the Black Hawk school district for its support of its team at the Kohl Center in Madison.

"It's quite an honor," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "I felt like we were pretty deserving of it. It's something our community can hang its hat on for how we carried ourselves up at the state tournament. I thought our adult and student fans did a good job of showing school spirit."

According to the WIAA, it is the first WIAA/Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award presented to Black Hawk. Other girls basketball teams that received honorable mention were Altoona, Beaver Dam, Brillion, Cuba City, Osseo-Fairchild and Weston.

Other schools that received a Team Sportsmanship award were Royall in boys basketball, Wausau West in boys ice hockey, River Falls Co-op in girls ice hockey, Ellsworth in wrestling and Platteville-Belmont-Lancaster in gymnastics.
