MONTICELLO - The Black Hawk girls basketball team assured themselves of a Six Rivers East Conference co-championship with Barneveld after cruising to a 51-24 win over Monticello.

Black Hawk (18-2, 11-1 Six Rivers East) had to settle for sharing the title after losing to Barneveld Tuesday night. The Warriors rebounded with a big win on the road. Black Hawk outscored Monticello 15-8 in the first quarter and led by 20 points at halftime (30-10).

Monticello sophomore point guard Taylor Pfeuti suffered an ankle injury with about three minutes left in the first quarter. Pfeuti went to the bench and she didn't return.

"We don't really ever say we base our game around one player," Monticello coach Paul Wedig said. "She's a big part of what we do. Whenever you get an injury, it takes the wind out of your sails.

"We didn't handle the pressure. We didn't play solid defense. We did at times and at times, it fell apart for us."

Black Hawk junior Kim Wellnitz scored a game-high 14 points and senior Paige Butler added 10 points for the Warriors.

The Ponies were led by freshman Desiree Marty and Becky Nelson who scored six points each.

Monticello (6-14, 4-8) will play at Benton in a regional opener Feb. 24 and Black Hawk will host Madison Abundant Life.
