Warriors climb out of hole to top Orioles

ARGYLE - The Warriors climbed out of an 0-2 hole to defeat the Argyle Orioles 21-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-6 in a Six Rivers East volleyball match Thursday.

Rachel Rygh had 18 kills, Alyssa Pieffer handed out 20 assists, and Melissa Wellnitz came up with 18 digs for Black Hawk.

The Orioles got an outstanding effort from Kayla Ostby, who had 28 assists and 20 digs. Micala Peterson led the Orioles in kills with nine and in aces with two. Tracy Dammen contributed two blocks for Argyle.

"Both teams played great ball," said Argyle head coach Shane Johnson. "When we got to games four and five, Black Hawk took away some of our strengths and we didn't make the necessary adjustments."

Argyle (3-2 Six Rivers East) will host conference leader Albany Tuesday.

Albany 3, Juda 0

JUDA - The Albany Comets improved to 4-0 in the Six Rivers East with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 win over Juda Thursday.

Sydney Bump played a dominant role with 18 kills, 19 digs, and three blocks for the Comets. Bump also got significant contributions from her teammates as Courtney Pfeuti had 32 assists and Kaitlyn Schulz had 16 digs and two aces. Hillary Best returned from a severe ankle injury suffered in the conference opener against Black Hawk and recorded four kills.

The Panthers were led by junior Ellen Kiser with seven kills and two blocks, junior C.J. Dunwiddie with nine digs, and senior Aly Pierce with 10 assists.

"We switched to a 5-1 offense and our kids played well with the new offense. The intesity level really picked up," said Panthers head coach Pam Green.

Juda (0-5 Six Rivers East) will travel to Pecatonica (0-5) while Albany (4-0) heads to Argyle Tuesday.

Cambridge 3, New Glarus 0

CAMBRIDGE - The Glarner Knights lost in three games to Cambridge 25-14, 25-12, 25-7 in a Capitol South Conference match.

Mara Gartzke led New Glarus with three kills and two aces. Lauren Narveson had eight assists and Maegan Roesslein had three digs for the Glarner Knights.

"We struggled with passing again tonight," said New Glarus head coach Lacy Bloedorn. "Cambridge is a very scrappy team. They get to everything. They just don't have many weaknesses."

New Glarus (1-4) will participate in the Middleton Invitational Saturday.

Monticello 3, Pecatonica 0

BLANCHARDVILLE - Senior Ellie Gifford led the Vikings with nine kills and seven assists, but the Ponies (1-1) were able to get their first conference win of the season with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-19 victory Thursday.

Nicole Dearth had two blocks, Kacie Schoepp dropped in three aces, and Allison Swenson contributed five digs for the Vikings.

Mineral Point 3, Darlington 1

MINERAL POINT - The Darlington Redbirds fell short of getting their first SWAL Conference win Thursday, falling to Mineral Point, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23.

Miranda Wiegel gave Darlington a boost with five kills while Elizabeth Mathias added seven blocks. Vanessa Riley came up with 10 assists and three aces for the Redbirds.

Darlington (0-6) will travel to Cuba City Tuesday to face the Cubans, a state qualifier last year who lost to Southwestern last week, breaking a conference winning streak that dated back to 2003.
