VIROQUA - The Monroe boys hockey co-op pulled its goalie in the final 2 minutes, but couldn't get a game-tying goal and lost a nail-biter to Viroqua 3-2 on Monday.
"It came down to the final faceoff in the last 15 seconds," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "We got off two shots we just couldn't put them in."
The Avalanche got a goal from Riley Jones of Darlington in the first period on assists from Colton O'Connor and senior Jake Ritchardsto take a 1-0 lead. Viroqua responded with three goals in the second period.
Monroe freshman Travis Edmunds scored a short-handed goal in the third period to slice Viroqua's lead to 3-2.
"It was a big shift of momentum after the penalty," Smith said of Edmunds' short-handed goal. "It was really nice to get that goal. It really boosted everyone."
With the loss, Monroe drops to 0-12.
"Things are coming together," Smith said. "We just need to be able to play all three periods, and not just two."
