Monroe freshman Martina Leal looks to clear the ball away from a Mount Horeb player in the Cheesemakers 4-1 loss to the Vikings Saturday at Honey Creek Park. With the non-conference loss the Cheesemakers drop to 3-2.
MONROE - Mount Horeb scored three second-half goals on a blustery day at Honey Creek Park Saturday to beat Monroe 4-1.

"I told them they were entitled to have just one not-so-good game," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said of the non-conference loss.

The Vikings struck first on Kelly Sullivan's goal as she lofted a shot into the wind and just over the outstretched arms of Monroe goal keeper Domenisha Underwood at 3 minutes, 48 seconds to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

The Cheesemakers (3-2, 1-1 Badger South) battled back and tied the game at 1 when junior Kylee Ritschard scored an unassisted goal at 8:22.

"Mount Horeb did a better job of getting to the ball," Ritschard said. "We could have done a better job of making up. We don't have a lot of girls on the team. We have played a lot of games this week. I know everyone was getting tired and it's hard to get fresh legs."

It appeared the Cheesemakers were in a good position tied at 1 at halftime.

"At halftime, I felt we had taken more shots," O'Neill said. "We had kind of dominated possession in the first half. We were confident enough going into the second half that we would score some goals."

A cross by Sullivan set up Morgan Paulson's goal at 46:16 to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. Paulson scored her second goal at 50:33 to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead.

"I think after they got that second goal they got more energy and were more physical," Ritschard said of the Vikings. "They got on that run. We have to keep it in our mind that we can get on a run too."

Mount Horeb capped the scoring by lofting a ball from 25 feet out over Underwood's head for the final goal to seal it. Underwood had 11 saves in her first start as goal keeper.

"In the second half for whatever reason, we were not playing as focused," O'Neill said. "We were not getting to the ball first. We were not getting to our marks. For whatever reason, when we had opportunities, we couldn't get the shots in."
