BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica baseball team started their season in perfect fashion, as three Viking pitchers combined to throw a perfect game against New Glarus in the Vikings' season opener, en route to a 15-0 victory.
Lucas McKeon started the game on the bump for the Vikings and threw three innings, striking out five. Chase Norton relieved McKeon in the fourth and struck out two. Drew Schliem struck out the side in the fifth to complete the perfect game.
"Pitchers threw strikes, got ahead. Such a key," said Pec coach Jim Strommen. "Getting ahead makes it so much easier on your defense, and your pitchers get a little confidence and work well. Those three guys are going to throw the majority of our pitches at the varsity level, so it was important for them to get a good start. That was good to see."
Offensively, the Pecatonica batters came out swinging. The Vikings put up eight runs in the first and seven in the second, giving them all 15 of their runs after two innings. Geoff Daley was perfect at the plate for Pec, going 3-for-3, including a double. Both Drew Schliem and Jacob Scoville had three RBIs for the Vikings.
"I thought the majority of our guys, upperclassmen in particular, did a good job tonight," Strommen said. "That was good to see against live pitching."
Strommen said that, after a winter that seemed to never go away, it was nice to be able to play a game outdoors.
"It was nice to get outside and play," he said. "We talked yesterday that we might be able to play (at home), and they were pretty excited about that."
Pecatonica (1-0) will host Barneveld on Monday in the Vikings' Six Rivers East conference opener. New Glarus (0-2) is scheduled to host Lodi on Tuesday.
