MONROE - Mount Horeb senior Jaden Neumann scored three goals to power the defending Division 3 state championship Vikings to an 8-2 win over Monroe in a non-conference game Tuesday at Honey Creek Park.

Mount Horeb's Roger Schultz added two goals for the Vikings, who scored five goals in the first half and rolled. With the win, Mount Horeb, ranked No. 1 in the Wisconsin Sports Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 poll, improved to 5-1. The only loss for the Vikings came to Badger South Conference power Oregon.

"Before the game I reminded them this is a good game to see where we stand against the best," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said.

Monroe (2-4-1) got some heartbreaking news before the game when the Cheesemakers found out that senior midfielder Ryne Miller, who had missed the first seven games, would be out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

"We were hoping we would get him (Miller) back for some of the season and conference," Vasquez said. "It's a big loss because this was his fourth year on the varsity. He's been playing midfielder since his sophomore year. Now, we will have to find a younger guy to play there."

Mount Horeb's Erik Iverson put the Vikings on the board with a goal at 4 minutes, 40 seconds. About 4 minutes later, Mount Horeb's Kyler Donovan scored a goal to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Tryen Chappell added a goal at 30:04 to extend the Vikings' lead to 3-0.

Neumann scored his first goal at 32:41 on an assist from Aiden Doran. Neumann then tacked on a second goal on a pass from Max Handrich to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead at the half.

"I talked to their coach and he thinks they are better than last year," Vasquez said. "There are no weak spots in there."

Schultz scored his second goal on an assist by Neumann to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead at 56:12.

Monroe sophomore Nick Schumacher, who has been playing more midfielder with the loss of Miller, scored a goal on an assist from senior Atticus Pond to cut the Vikings' lead to 6-1.

Neumann earned the hat trick scoring his third goal on a pass from Doran. Schultz scored his second goal of the second half to give the Vikings a 7-1 lead at 77:23.

Monroe's Evan Thompson scored a goal on an assist by sophomore Nick Benkert at 85:39.

Pond had 11 saves as the goalkeeper.

The Cheesemakers played the game with just one sub. Senior Nick Borowitz missed the game because he was taking a test and junior Luke Nicholson missed the game with a thigh injury, Vasquez said.

"We will be back to full strength and have a little more depth for the next game," Vasquez said.

McFarland tops Sugar River

MCFARLAND - Sugar River's Jared Widish scored a goal on a penalty kick in the 64th minute, but it wasn't enough and the Raiders lost a non-conference game to McFarland 4-1 on Tuesday.

McFarland's Ethan Nichols scored two goals to lead the Spartans. The game was scoreless until Nichols scored his first goal in the 38th minute. He tacked on a second goal in the 42nd minute to lead the Spartans. With the win, McFarland improves to 5-1 and Sugar River drops to 2-4.

Sugar River goalkeeper Cole Myers had 10 saves.
