MONROE - Beloit Turner freshman Anthony Theisen got his first start at goalie, and he came up with 38 saves in the Monroe boys hockey co-op's 13-1 loss to Stoughton Friday night.

Theisen stepped in at goalie since Monroe sophomore Jesse Scheider missed the game due to an illness. Stoughton (7-3, 3-2 Badger Conference) out-shot the Avalanche 51-23. Monroe coach Nate Brown wouldn't rule out Theisen getting more time at goalie down the road.

"He absolutely did a good job for his first game," Brown said. "He's quick and has very good reflexes. Anthony has a lot of skill all over the ice. They will play for that spot in the coming weeks."

With the loss, the Avalanche drop to 0-6. The Vikings had three players post hat tricks including senior Christopher Mill, junior Aaron Shanklin and junior Brandon Erickson.

"Our guys need to be able to take the body," Brown said. We missed a few of those. Stoughton is a quick team. They were certainly fast."

The Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Mill scored the first goal on assists from Anthony Volk and Maxwell Quale just 1:29 into the first period. Avalanche senior Jarrett Warden scored the game-tying goal at 10 minutes on assists from junior Gus Werhane (Lena-Winslow) and John Kallgren (Albany). Shanklin scored about 1 minute later to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.

The Vikings erupted for six goals in the second period. Austin Miller and Erickson scored early on in the period to give the Vikings a 4-1 lead. Mill and Erickson each scored two goals apiece in the second period.

"They made a few good shots unfortunately," Brown said. "Our guys had about a five-minute window. We made some mistakes. That will happen. They were not talking enough. We will get better in practice."

The Avalanche will look to pick up their first win when they play two games at Escanaba, Michigan Dec. 28-29.

"They always play hard," Brown said. "I never have any doubts about that. It doesn't matter what the score is. They always skate as hard as they can with everything they have."
