BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica softball team had the comeback coaches dream about to sweep a doubleheader against Black Hawk Thursday.
The Vikings battled back from a deficit and scored nine runs in the eighth inning to cap a comeback, 14-8 win to sweep the twin bill. Pecatonica (5-14, 3-8 Six Rivers East) won the first game 7-3.
Pecatonica junior Allison Swenson had a two-run triple in the eighth. Fellow junior Katie Sather also had a clutch, two-run single.
The Vikings trailed 5-2 before scoring three runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Pecatonica senior Ellie Gifford had an RBI double and junior Michala Boese had a game-tying RBI double that sent the game into extra innings.
"For us to tie the game up, send it into extra innings and win it was huge," Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer said. "It was good for us to be in that situation and come out on top. As a coach you always think your kids can do that."
Black Hawk pounded out 13 hits off Pecatonica sophomore pitcher Cora Demler. Demler earned the win in both games for the Vikings and she pitched all 15 innings, finishing with four strikeouts in the doubleheader. Black Hawk's Katie Powers went 2 for 3, sophomore Abby Schiferl was 2 for 4.
Schiferl pitched eight innings for the Warriors and also gave up 13 hits. She walked three.
Pecatonica sophomore Michelle Francois went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and Gifford was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Swenson and Andrea McGowan were each 2 for 4.
The Vikings were clinging to a 4-3 lead going into the sixth inning. Black Hawk pitcher Kayla Melland struggled with her control and she gave up three unearned runs after hitting two and walking one. Schiferl pitched in relief and retired the only two batters she faced, including striking out McGowan with two runners on.
Pecatonica sophomore Emma Marion went 3 for 4 at the plate with three runs scored in the first game. Boese was 2 for 2 with two doubles.
