Vikings' sprinters deliver

SOUTH WAYNE - Both the River Ridge girls and boys track teams won championships at the Black Hawk Invitational Tuesday.

The River Ridge girls outdistanced Pecatonica-Argyle 657-297 for the team title. Black Hawk finished third (174) and Monticello was last (63) out of six teams. In the boys' meet, River Ridge ran away with the title 630-249 over second place Monticello. Pecatonica-Argyle took fifth (126) and Black Hawk was last (117).

Pecatonica-Argyle's Josie Penniston won both the 100-meter dash (13.30) and the 200 (27.33). Teammate Samantha Erickson won the 800 in 2 minutes, 44.69 seconds and took second in the 1,600 (6:12.47). Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Taetum Pagel took second place in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches). The Vikings' 1,600 relay team of Elizabeth Tisch, Adriana Johnson, Erickson and Penniston finished first (4:36.58). Johnson added a second-place finish in the 400 (1:10.18).

Black Hawk's Haley Gertsch won the 400 (1:09.92) and took second place in the 800 (2:50.34). Black Hawk's Megan Stephens won the 100 hurdles (20.24). Teammate Brianna Hagen won the long jump (14-0) and took second place in both the 100 (13.68) and 200 (28.52).

Monticello's Ashley Risley finished first in the 1,600 (6:10.56).

In the boys' meet, Monticello junior Andy Yaun won the 400 (54.74) and senior teammate John Zuber took second (56.34). Monticello senior Dylan Beckwith won the 800 (2:19.53) and was part of the winning 1,600 relay. Beckwith teamed with David Roussager, Bryss Shover and Austin Blumer won the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:52.90.

The Ponies' 3,200 relay team of Blumer, Shover, Roussager and Yaun won the race (9:16). Shover also added a second-place finish in the shot put (36-0).

Black Hawk freshman Michael Flanagan won the high jump (5-0). Black Hawk junior Caleb Novak finished first in the 1,600 (5:28.88).

The Vikings' 1,600 relay team took second (4:13.37). Joey Boland took third place in the 800 (2:24.78) and junior Grayson Scholl was third place in the shot put (33-5 3/4) and sophomore Devin Erickson took third in the discus (99-6).
