Vikings finish as runner-up

MINERAL POINT - The Pecatonica-Argyle wrestling team had four wrestlers punch their tickets to the sectional after the WIAA Division 3 Mineral Point regional Saturday.

Mineral Point, ranked No. 2 in the latest Crossface Division 3 poll, ran away with the regional title 284-180 over Pecatonica-Argyle. Black Hawk finished sixth.

The Pecatonica-Argyle wrestlers who qualified for the sectional include regional champions Cody James at 119 pounds and senior heavyweight Ross Gilbertson. The other sectional qualifiers include senior Chris James (135) and senior Ian Sigg (189). The lone Black Hawk sectional qualifier was Michael Walker (215) who finished second.

Pec-Argyle sophomore Cody James (20-15) pinned Parkview's Nick Gumtow in 24 seconds. In the title match, he pinned Deerfield's Pat Tolmie in 3 minutes, 5 seconds. Chris James (26-14) at 135 pinned Parkview's Cody Trezek in 2:46. Mineral Point's Kyle Bruce pinned James in 1:54 in the semifinals. He won second place by rule by virtue of his earlier win against Trezek.

Sigg (20-14) at 189 pinned Parkview's Justin Graham in the semifinals in 2:41. He lost a championship match to Cambridge's Jack Nett who defeated him in a technical fall 18-2. He took second place by rule by virtue of his semifinal win against Graham.

Gilbertson (21-5) pinned Parkview's Wes Groomz-Vinz in 2:20. He also dominated the title match pinning Mineral Point's Biran Steffes in 1:29. The Vikings had three wrestlers take third including Ethan Averill (112), Tyler Francois (140) and Mick (215).

Black Hawk's Walker at 215 pinned Parkview's Jonah Hanson in 1:25. He then defeated Pecatonica-Argyle's Zach Mick 6-3 for second place. Black Hawk junior Andy Stauffacher finished third at heavyweight.

The Warriors had three wrestlers take fourth including Jared Pickett (103), Dakota Meier (130) and senior Bryant Luhman (171).
