MOUNT HOREB - The Monroe girls soccer team was less than 2 minutes away from going to overtime before the upset bid of No. 2 state-ranked Mount Horeb came up short in a 2-1 loss in a WIAA Division 2 regional championship game Saturday.

Mount Horeb's Cassie Handrick scored two goals, including the game-winner at 78:48 to send the top-seeded Vikings to the sectional semifinals on Thursday where they will host Sugar River.

"I don't think Mount Horeb was expecting the fight they got," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.

The Cheesemakers keyed in on stopping Mount Horeb senior Kelly Sullivan, who has scored 34 goals this season.

"To shut down Kelly Sullivan, you have to give some credit to Molly Hlubek and Allie Coplien," O'Neill said.

Monroe sophomore Gabby Ludwig scored a goal on an assist from Emily Frankowski at 63:54 to tie the game at 1.

The Cheesemakers played without sophomore Vanessa Studer who suffered a season-ending injury earlier this year.

"I thought every single player brought their best game," O'Neill said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game. They have two of the top two scorers in the state."

Monroe goalkeeper Rachel Wellnitz had 15 saves.

"Rachel Wellnitz had a phenomenal saves in the second half," O'Neill said. "In the second half, she was getting pounded. It was her best game of the season. We really had a fantastic season considering our injuries and youth."

MOUNT HOREB - The Raiders captured their fourth regional championship in the last five years with a shut-out of the Blue Devils on Saturday.

Both teams had to withstand some injuries. Sugar River played without center defensive captain Kaitlin Jennrich due to an ankle injury and Evansville was without senior center midfielder captain Lydia Eager due to a quad injury.

Sugar River (17-5-2) will play at No. 1 seed Mount Horeb at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
