MONROE - Facing the Vikings for the second time in as many days, the end result for the Monroe baseball team ended the same as before, losing 13-5 to the visiting Vikings. With the win against Monroe, Stoughton claimed the top spot in the Badger South Conference standings.
The Cheesemakers got off to a rough start after the Vikings rattled off nine runs in the opening inning.
"We came out a little different than how we did last night," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "I thought we played pretty well with them (Stoughton) on Monday, (but) tonight it felt like we came out little bit like we were sleepwalking."
Stoughton added two more runs in the top of the second and third innings before the Cheesemakers got on board with three runs in the bottom of the third. After adding two more runs in the fourth, the Cheesemakers were held scoreless as they struggled defensively against the conference's top team.
"We had a tough time finding the strike zone early on," Huffman said. "Stoughton is a great hitting team, (but) any time you get behind early like that, it makes it hard for a team to climb back."
Junior Sean Saxby finished 1-for-2, including two RBIs to lead the Cheesemakers (2-17, 1-10). Chase Hellenbrand went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Matt Coplien also added an RBI. Monroe will host Milton on Thursday.
