STOUGHTON - A short-handed Monroe wrestling team had three wrestlers post wins in a 60-12 dual meet loss to Badger South power Stoughton on Friday.
Monroe sophomore Isaac Allen at 160 pounds defeated Stoughton's Amiel Flocca in a nail-biter 4-2. The match was tied at 2 to start the third period. Allen scored on a reversal with a little more than 1 minute left to seal the win.
The Cheesemakers forfeited five matches at 106, 113, 120, 132 and 195. The Cheesemakers have two starting wrestlers injured, one was battling illness and another trying to overcome a concussion.
"We gave them 30 points," Monroe coach Tom Witt said.
Monroe junior Traiten Gorr (220) beat Stoughton's Austin Benton 8-1. Gorr had two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead and cruised from there.
"Traiten had a size and weight advantage," Witt said. "Benton weighed in at 195. He wore him down."
It marks the fourth time Gorr has defeated Benton in the past two years. He defeated him last year to take third place in the conference tournament.
Monroe sophomore Kyle Walter at heavyweight pinned Stoughton's Josiah Nelson in 4 minutes, 28 seconds.
"He (Walter) is gaining confidence every time out on the mat," Witt said. He had a couple of lapses, but got a reversal in the third period and put him on his back."
Fellow sophomore Cole Murray (126) lost a heartbreaker to Caleb Louis 4-3. Murray scored on a first period escape to take an early lead. Louis scored on an a reversal and escape late in the period.
"Hopefully, he will learn you can't relax against a lot of good guys because they will score points on you," Witt said of Murray.
