MONROE - After practicing on the front nine at the Monroe Country Club most of the season, Monroe senior Eric Timm and the Cheesemakers played the back nine Monday with a tournament on the front.

Timm shot a team-best 5-over-par 41, but wasn't satisfied after the Cheesemakers lost a dual to Stoughton 174-176 at the Monroe Country Club.

"I couldn't get off the tee very well today," Timm said. "I had a few short wedge shots I couldn't get in. Our goal is to win out the rest of our conference matches. We obviously want to play good at home."

The back nine is a par 36 compared to the front that is a par 34. The back nine is 3,334 yards, which is 425 yards further than the front. Monroe golf coach Braden Rindy said the team usually just practices on the front nine.

"That (playing the back nine) is not an excuse," Rindy said. "Even though we were playing the back nine, we thought we knew the greens and had an advantage. People were just not on our A-game. I just think we weren't mentally prepared tonight."

With the loss, Monroe drops to 1-2 in the Badger South Conference. Timm racked up four pars on the 437-yard No. 10, the 188-yard No. 14, the 321-yard No. 15 and the 201-yard No. 16. He relied on his putting on greens that appeared fast for many other golfers.

"On the green, I was putting pretty well and had a couple of nice comeback putts for par," he said.

Monroe junior Matt Miller had two double bogeys on No. 12 and No. 15 and bogeyed two holes in the first five holes he played.

"It was a little bit of a rough start," Miller said, who shot a 6-over-par 42.

He just missed a putt for birdie on the 567-yard No. 17. He pulled the putt wide and settled for a par. Miller then finished strong with a birdie on the 505-yard No. 18 that challenged players with a titled green.

"I just got on a roll the last couple of holes to finish strong," Miller said. "It was really nice to finish with a birdie in the end."

Monroe freshman Nick Baumann finished with a 44 and teammate Kyle Krebs carded a 49.

The Cheesemakers were two strokes away from qualifying for the sectional as a team last year. Timm and Miller were both sectional qualifiers last year.

"Last year we had three guys who could shoot low scores," Timm said. "This year we have four guys who can shoot good scores. I think that will help out a lot."

One area Rindy sees the Cheesemakers must improve is putting.

"I noticed tonight our putting was off a little bit," he said. "I know a few of our kids three-putted. We want to keep it down to a two-putt maximum."

Monroe won't have to worry about dwelling on one round too long. The Cheesemakers host Oregon today.

"We have been playing matches and invites, so we haven't had much time to practice," Rindy said. "It will be nice to have a couple of practices later this week so we can center ourselves."
