REEDSBURG - Monroe senior Hannah Vetterli had a game to remember crushing her first home run on a grand slam, going 2-for-4 with six RBI to power the Cheesemakers to a 15-1 five-inning win over Reedsburg on Friday.
"Hannah had a big night," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "The grand slam home run was her first home run ever."
Vetterli's grand slam came in the Cheesemakers' 12-run second inning where they batted around the order. Vetterli also had a two-run single in the second.
With the win, Buvid picked up his 499th career coaching win.
Monroe senior Natalie Dillon pitched two one-hit shutout innings. She struck out three and didn't issue a walk. Monroe junior Carly Upmann pitched 22⁄3 innings and gave up just one unearned run to get the win. Upmann allowed two hits and struck out one.
"Natalie really kept the ball down and worked on her fastball location," Buvid said. "We were able to get Carly some work too."
Monroe senior Kylea Ambrose also had a big game going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Dillon finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
"Our kids did a very nice job," Buvid said. "Any time you put up 12 runs in an inning, I don't care who you are, going against that is pretty good."
Monroe (14-5, 7-2 Badger South) will host Brodhead on Monday. The Cheesemakers will then host Stoughton in a crucial conference game on Tuesday and play at Fort Atkinson on Friday. Monroe trails Fort Atkinson and Stoughton by one game in the race for the conference championship.
"It's make or break for us on Tuesday," Buvid said. "We have to win."
