WIOTA - The Wiota Home Talent League baseball team was looking to knock off Western Section leader Verona on Sunday.
Wiota (8-4) trailed 5-2 going into the eighth inning, but Verona erupted for seven runs in the eighth to hand Wiota a 12-2 loss.
"I thought we played them tough and then the roof fell in on us," Wiota co-manager Dick Schliem said.
Verona's Matt Peetz had a two-run single off Tommy Meier and Clayton Brandt had a two-run single off Jeff Solberg to highlight the eighth.
Justin Doyle started on the mound and pitched 6 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs on 11 hits.
The Indians only had three hits.
"It's hard to win a game when you only get three hits," Schliem said.
Verona had six players with at least two hits.
Derek Burgenske went 3-for-4 and Peetz was 3-for-5 to lead Verona.
Wiota will play at Monroe at 1 p.m. Saturday and then travel to play Platteville on Sunday. The Indians will close out the regular season at Verona on Friday, July 27.
