Upstart Spartans earn split against Monroe softball

MCFARLAND - An 11-3 Badger South victory had never felt more condemning for Monroe softball.

That was the score of the first of two games between the Cheesemakers and McFarland played Tuesday evening - it was the completion of a game suspended by rain April 3 with Monroe up 9-2 after four innings at Twining Park.

The Spartans (3-4 Badger South) put a few good swings on Renee Schuttler for a few hits in closing the first matchup and rode that hot hitting to a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

"They're scary good on offense, sort of like we were a couple weeks ago," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We got hit as hard as we've been hit all year."

McFarland rapped nine hits in the second game, two to lead off the fifth and chase Monroe starter Carlie Olsen with the Spartans already up 3-1. The runs eventually came around to score.

Monroe (10-2, 5-1) caught a mild offensive groove a bit too late after its defense kept things close. Senior catcher Kylie Kaiser gunned down two base-stealers and second baseman Kayla Rackow made a slick diving play.

The Spartans not only split their season series with Monroe, but also Verona after a nailbiting recent 8-6 loss to the Wildcats.

"When you're playing Verona tough and beating them once, you're doing something right," Buvid said.

Monroe makes up Monday's rainout at Stoughton today at 4:30 p.m.
