U14 girls finish 4th at tourney

RIVER FALLS - The Avalanche U14 girls hockey team traveled to River Falls to take part in the U14 Ponytail Tournament Friday through Sunday and finished fourth place out of six teams.

The Avalanche first took on the North East Metro Starz. Tessa Janecke lit the lamp with an unassisted goal, while the Starz added two goals in the first period. Rebekah Rath scored a goal in the second period on passes from Alyssa Knauf and Brooke Teubert. The two teams battled it out in the third, but the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Monroe's Ally Esch recorded seven saves and the Avalanche outshot the Starz 19-9.

Later that day, the Avalanche skated to a 3-2 win over the rival U14 DC Diamonds from Madison. The Avalanche put up two goals from Cammi Ganshert (assisted by Alyssa Knauf) and Tessa Janecke (assisted by Ganshert) in the first period to DC Diamonds' one goal. The Diamonds added a goal in the second period. The Avalanche smelled victory in the third, as Anika Einbeck scored a goal on an assist by Janecke. The Avalanche outshot the Diamonds 27-13.

In the final game of the tournament on Sunday and playing for the third-place trophy, the Avalanche ran out of steam and lost 5-1 to the River Falls/Baldwin Blackcats. Ganshert scored a goal on an assist by Janecke. Esch recorded 24 saves.

On Sunday morning, the Avalanche U14 girls played a pick-up game in Menomonie against U14 Chippewa Valley Thundercats. The Avalanche won 12-2. Einbeck and Ganshert each earned hat tricks while Janecke added two goals, and Anna Malone, Rebekah Rath, Madeline Williams and Lilah Bauer each added one goal. Earning assists were Lilah Bauer, Rath, Tessa Janecke (two), Madeline Williams, Haley Knauf, Teubert and Alyssa Knauf. Esch recorded 17 saves.



Squirt A

The Monroe Avalanche Squirt A team played two games on Sunday. The first game took place at Mystique Arena in Dubuque, Iowa, and the Avalanche knocked off the Squirt B Jr. Saints 7-1.

Ethan Rosenstiel scored a goal 4:20 into the first period on a pass from Wyatt Janecke. Wyatt Janecke then scored the second goal of the game. The next three goals were flipped into the net by Blaze Janecke, earning himself another hat trick.

Midway through the second period, Rosenstiel lit the lamp one more time. The lone goal in the third period came from a pass from Seth Brandt to Marlies Brandli. Brandli tipped the puck into the net sealing the win. Goalie Jack Leverton recorded nine saves.

Following the game, the team traveled back to Monroe to take on the Stoughton Squirt A team at Slice Arena. The Avalanche battled for 36 minutes against Stoughton, with Stoughton coming out with the win. The only Avalanche goal was from a break-away scored from Wyatt Janecke on an assist by Gavin Roth.

Leverton had 64 saves. The Avalanche Squirt A team plays at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at SLICE. The public is invited for the annual Appreciation Day to honor players' teachers, grandparents, arena sponsor and hometown community members. Refreshments will be served for guests.



Squirt B

On Saturday, the Avalanche PeeWee B lost 3-2 to the Patriots B team.

The first period was scoreless until the Patriots scored with five minutes to go. In the second period, Monroe had many pucks hit the posts or the goalie, but trailed 2-0.

Luke Kuberski scored a goal in the third period on a pass from Blaze Janecke. Jared Dillon also scored for the B team on an assist from Luke Kuberski.

Aiden Runkle had 22 saves. On Sunday, the Monroe Avalanche traveled to Dubuque to take on the Pee Wee B team. It was a physical, high-paced game with the Avalanche leading early before falling 5-2. Bryce Montgomery scored the first goal for Monroe. Ruger Hanson also scored a goal on an assist by Dillon. Runkle had 22 saves.
