MONROE - Ethan Moehn and Jake Hirsbrunner used the competition between each other in practice to become two of the state's elite cross country runners.
Moehn and Hirsbrunner were named first-team all-state recently. The senior duo helped lead the Cheesemakers to a WIAA Division 2 state runner-up finish as a team.
"It's something that is one of your wildest dreams," Moehn said of the all-state honor. "I can't as a senior and individual runner look back on my cross country season and wish I had done something more," Moehn said. Everything I wanted happened. It's a dream come true."
It's the first time the Cheesemakers have had a first-team all-state runner. Monroe is the only school to have two runners named all-state.
"To have two people in the elitest of the elite of the cross country runners in the state is awesome," Moehn said. "It just shows how good of a group we have and how elite our team is this year."
Jake Hirsbrunner, who finished just his second year of cross country, was excited to earn one of the most prestigious awards in the state for cross country.
"It's a huge accomplishment," Hirsbrunner said. "I never went into the season thinking I could be first-team all-state."
Hirsbrunner said bringing a trophy home and getting an all-state honor just shows all the hard work and hundreds of miles he put in paid off.
Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner was thrilled to have two Cheesemaker runners recognized.
"To have two (all-state) in the same year is phenomenal," Dave Hirsbrunner said. "It doesn't happen very often."
The all-state honors for Moehn and Jake Hirsbrunner came based on their finishes and times they ran at the state meet. Moehn finished as the Division 2 state champion and Hirsbrunner took fourth and was 0.06 of a second away from third place.
"This is a sport where no one's opinions matter," Dave Hirsbrunner said. "There is no voting on all-state. There is no politics with kids. It's all based on their performances and times. You have to prove it with your feet."
Both Moehn and Hirsbrunner are pursuing offers to run in college. Moehn has narrowed his list for running track and cross country down to Illinois, Minnesota and Arkansas. Hirsbrunner is looking at running track at the University of Wisconsin, Northern Iowa or the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Moehn said he hopes to decide on where he will run in college within the next month.
"Before Christmas has always been my calendar goal," Moehn said.
Jake Hirsbrunner has a similar timetable for making his decision.
"I would like to make a decision by Christmas," he said.
Hirsbrunner just started the basketball season, but he knows when the spring comes, the Cheesemakers will be a favorite in track.
"We will definitely have a target on our back," he said. "I know me and Ethan love running with a target on our back."
