MONROE - Junior Hunter Ward scored a game-high 15 points off the bench to lift the Monroe High School boys basketball team to a 51-42 win over Fort Atkinson on Tuesday.
Fort Atkinson cut the Cheesemakers' lead to six points late in the game, but Monroe (2-2, 1-1 Badger South) made 6 of 8 free throws in the final 2 minutes. Ward made 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch.
"They were fouling to try to get back into it, and we hit some free throws down the stretch to win it," Monroe coach Brian Bassett said. "We just wanted to get one in the win column. To get a second win in a row, I can't remember the last time we did that. It didn't matter who we were playing we just wanted to win a second straight."
Monroe defeated Brodhead 66-65 in its last game Saturday.
Carter Sawdey added 14 points and had a dunk in the second half that was waived off due to a technical foul for hanging too long on the rim.
"We have talked to him (Sawdey) about being aggressive," Bassett said. "We don't care if he got a T on that dunk. He was being aggressive."
Monroe junior Brayden Zettle added eight points and hit two 3-pointers.
"I think our defensive intensity was better most of the game," Bassett said in comparison to games against Brodhead and Madison Edgewood. "I think we were able to wear them down."
