NEW GLARUS - Teams that make mistakes seldom win football games.
That's what the Glarner Knights learned Friday night as they came out on the losing end of a 33-14 game against Beloit Turner.
"They came ready to play," New Glarus-Monticello coach Jeff Eichelkraut said of the Trojans after the game. "We knew it was going to be a tough game. Our hats are off to them."
The Glarner Knights committed nine penalties, which cost them 45 yards, lost one of five fumbles and also had one pass intercepted.
The fumbles they didn't lose cost them valuable field position and stopped drives.
It wasn't the outcome Eichelkraut wanted, but the game did provide his team with something to think about.
"This is a learning lesson for us," he said. "We just have to keep improving and getting better."
New Glarus-Monticello started the game with an on-side kick that Beloit Turner recovered at its own 46. The Trojans weren't able to take advantage of the good field position. However, Beloit Turner's good field position made it difficult for the Glarner Knights deep in their own end of the field following a punt.
Most of the first quarter was played on the New Glarus-Monticello end of the field and both defenses made it hard for the opposing team.
Turner scored first with just over a minute to play in the quarter on a 67-yard punt return by Nolan Byrom. The speedy junior took the punt around to the right and never looked back.
The Trojans' second score was set up after the Glarner Knights found themselves pinned deep in their own territory after another punt. New Glarus-Monticello was able to move the ball to its own 8-yard line but had to punt.
Starting on the New Glarus-Monticello 40-yard line, Turner quarterback Jordan Conway found Kasey Hallmark open for a touchdown pass. Conway finished the game with three completions for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
Trailing 13-0, the Glarner Knights blocked a punt deep in Turner territory and took over on the Trojans' 14-yard line. Three plays later, Matt O'Connor scored from 2 yards out. Logan Lockard's kick cut the Trojans' lead to six.
But Turner wasn't done.
With 2:40 on the clock until halftime, the Glarner Knights needed to stop Turner and get ready for the second half. The Trojans weren't about to sit on their six-point lead.
Starting at their own 30, they moved the ball down the field on the ground and in the air. Conway threw his second touchdown pass of the night to Stephen Porter.
The Glarner Knights trailed 19-7 at the half.
Byrom, who hurt the Glarner Knights all night long, scored the first points of the second half late in the third quarter with a 54-yard touchdown run. Byrom finished the game with 134 yards on 20 carries. The touchdown run in the third was the hardest one for New Glarus-Monticello fans to see, as it all but put the game out of reach.
"(Byrom) is a pretty good runner," Eichelkraut said after the game.
Both teams added touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Ben Papendorf scored for Turner and Ben Burke scored for New Glarus-Monticello.
Cory McGowan led New Glarus-Monticello in rushing with 43 yards on three carries. Parker Havens added 39 yards on 13 carries.
