Monroe senior Mitch Tordoff and Darlington sophomore Alex Erickson were named honorable mention on the all-state boys basketball team Monday by the Associated Press.
Tordoff, who averaged 18 points per game, led the Cheesemakers to their third straight trip to state. At the state tournament, Tordoff averaged 30.5 ppg, and broke five Division 2 state records and tied two others in helping lead Monroe (19-8) to a runner-up finish.
Erickson averaged 21.6 ppg as Darlington finished 13-9 and won six of its last seven games.
Madison Memorial senior Jeronne Maymon, a Marquette recruit, was named Player of the Year. Maymon and Vander Blue, a University of Wisconsin recruit, were named first-team all-state after leading the Spartans to the Division 1 title.
AP 2009 Wisconsin coach of the year honors went to Jim Blaine of Benton, who led the Zephyrs to the Division 4 title - the first championship for the tiny school with an enrollment of fewer than 90 students. Blaine figures about 1,000 people turned out to congratulate them - not bad, considering the fact that the town's population is just under 1,000, give or take a few folks.
"Depends on which side of town you drive in on," Blaine joked, noting that signs welcoming visitors on each side of town display slightly different population figures.
It could change the course of Benton High School's future. The Benton school district faces an April 7 referendum, asking voters for permission to exceed revenue limits set by the state, and reports in the Dubuque (Iowa) Telegraph Herald indicate a rejection of the measure could hasten a merger with a nearby district.
