Thunder softball sweeps USSSA qualifier

Morrison, IL - All three Stateline Thunder softball teams - 10U, 12U, and 14U - earned 1st place in their respective divisions in a United States Sports Specialty Association qualifier the weekend of June 7-8.

The Thunder 10U team started the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record in pool play, including a 6-0 win over Geneseo, a 3-2 win over Sterling, and a 13-1 victory against the Lady Hitmen from the Quad Cities. The earned a No. 1 seed going into bracket play on Sunday, where they were matched up with the Lady Hitmen again.

The Thunder 12U team started pool play by facing the Aftershock from Rock Falls. The Thunder came out of the gates fast and won 12-2. Their second game, against Sterling Steam, was close all the way to the end before Thunder edged out a 3-2 win. In their final pool play game of the day, against the Skokie Slammers, the Thunder earned a 16-1 victory, earning a No. 1 seed going into the bracket on Sunday.

The Thunder 14U team started pool play with an 8-0 win over the Belvidere Blasters, followed by a 13-3 victory over the Naperville Diamonds. In their final pool play game, against the Sauk Valley Rocksters, the Thunder won 8-1 to earn a No. 1 seed in the Sunday bracket.

On Sunday morning, in bracket play, the Thunder 10U team defeated the Lady Hitmen for the second time, capturing a 15-0 win to advance straight into the championship game. In the title game, the Thunder won a rematch over Sterling Steam 7-1. The Thunder 10U team only gave up two earned runs over the entire weekend, including a no-hitter on Saturday and a perfect game on Sunday. They also sported a team batting average of .452, and outscored their opponents 44 to 4.

The Thunder 12U team started bracket play with a win over the Belvidere Blasters by a score of 4-2. In the next round, they faced the Geneseo Green Xtreme for a spot in the championship game. In the first inning, with Thunder up 2-1, mother nature let loose with heavy rain. The game was postponed and after only a few minutes of heavy downpour, the fields were determined to be unplayable by the tournament director.

The Thunder 14U was also unable to finish their bracket due to the rain. However, they were able to play their first bracket game which they won 4-0 against the Belvidere Blasters. The rain shut down the tourney before they could get another game in.

In accordance with USSSA rules, the tournament director considered results of head-to-head matchups and calculated runs scored and runs allowed for all completed games, and the Thunder 12U and 14U teams were awarded first place in their respective divisions.

The Thunder 12U team outscored their opponents 37-8, had a team batting average of .407, had 86 hits (10 extra-base hits), and committed only two errors over the entire weekend. The pitching staff struck out 22 batters, to go along with just 6 walks.

The Thunder sweep of the USSSA qualifier was the third time this year the Stateline Thunder teams have swept a tournament. Earlier in the season, Thunder teams swept the Freeport Pretzel Twist Classic tournament and the Oregon Spring Smash tournament.

With their performances in Morrison, the Thunder 10U improved their season record to 25-6, the Thunder 12U improved to 31-11, and the Thunder 14U team improved to 20-5-1.
