MONROE - Junior Becky Thoman was just as lucky as she was good Tuesday night in a nonconference soccer match against Platteville-Lancaster at T.R. Holyoke Field.
Thoman headed a corner kick from senior Olivia Werth that went off another player's shoulder and into the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal at 48 minutes, 11 seconds in a thrilling 3-2 win over Platteville-Lancaster on Senior Night.
"It was a great ball by Olivia to get it in the mix," Monroe coach Kyle Kasten said of Werth's corner kick. "It was great for Becky to challenge it."
With the win, Monroe improves to 2-1 overall. Monroe sophomore Sabina Gonzalez scored two goals. The win came on the heels of junior goalkeeper Anna Latimer (knee) and senior Kennedy Ludwig (leg) getting injured in a home opening 9-1 loss to Oregon Monday. Kasten looked at the game against Platteville as a bounce-back victory.
"It was a great win for the team to pull through," he said. "With the injuries you can't plan on that. With the injuries and the adversity of having Platteville come back and tie the game twice, for the girls to come back and hit the ground running was perfect."
It wasn't all an offensive show. Monroe senior Reily pond made a save on a penalty kick with about 5 minutes to go to preserve the win. Pond finished with seven saves.
"She (Pond) made a phenomenal save and that sealed it for us," Kasten said. "I can't say enough good words about her. Reily knows what to do and she has stepped up."
The Cheesemakers (0-1 Badger South) jumped out to an early lead when Gonzalez scored her first goal on an assist from senior Morgan Seffrood at 16:54. After the Hillmen came back to tie it, Gonzalez scored her second goal on a pass by Seffrood to give the Cheesemakers a 2-1 lead at the half.
Platteville-Lancaster tied the game on a penalty kick at 46:18. That set the stage for Thoman to score an opportune goal moments later.
Monroe will play at fourth-ranked Madison Edgewood Thursday.
